A family owned business that took on a new venture, of dry curing flavored bacon,

Twin Oak Farms Ltd. is a family business run by Dan and Shelly Skoberg along with their 5 kids - Tate, Kiley, Preston, Ethan and Bradley. Their farm was established in 1905 and has a little bit of everything. They farm approximately 3500 acres of cropland in which they grow wheat, barley, oats, and canola while also doing some custom farming for others as well. On the farm they follow the old philosophy that kids need to learn how to do chores and look after animals. So, to do that they also have some feeder steers that their kids feed and sell for market and some laying hens the kids feed, water, and pick eggs and carton them up. This helps the kids learn responsibility and gain knowledge. Along with grain farming, some feeder steers, horses, and laying hens, Twin Oak Farms also raise feeder hogs. Dan and Shelly are involved in 4-H with the kids as well as volunteer in their community when time permits. Shelly has been involved with School council in the past and Dan sits on the Flagstaff County Ag Service Board. Dan and Shelly are very community-oriented people. Twin Oak Farms latest venture has taken off and it has been a very rewarding experience. During the Spring of 2020 when the whole world was in lock down, they decided to perfect a dry cure bacon recipe using their home grown hogs. Through trials and tribulations, and a lot of taste testing, they were able to perfect their recipe. They shared their product with friends and family and after receiving positive feedback, they knew they had something special. They decided to retail their first batch on Facebook in January of 2021 and were blown away by the reception. They sold out in less then a week. They knew they had to run with the idea and make and sell more. They told their kids "welcome to becoming an entrepreneur". From nutrition labels to packaging to getting the best deals on ingredients to getting government inspected they had a lot to learn about running the business. Little by little they got everything they needed to do completed and quickly outgrew the area they had been working in. It was time to build a new building and today, they are busy making a variety of flavoured bacon in their new space. They are currently working on a website which will be available soon. They have called this whole experience "the uncontrollable wildfire, that doesn’t need fuel anymore. It fuels itself and it been an amazing journey, that we are excited to watch grow." Twin Oak Farms wishes to thank everyone who has taste tested and spread the word about their bacon. "We are truly grateful to each one of you that has contributed to our success." - Dan and Shelly Skoberg
