Harty Locomotive Works Ltd. is a general blacksmithing and manual machine shop.
Ethan Harty began forging at the age of 11 and had the opportunity to study the “Tools to Make Tools” curriculum under Alec Steele in Norfolk, UK, at the age of 13. After dropping out of high school, he officially started his business at 16 and has been working as a full-time blacksmith ever since. His clients range from beginner blacksmiths to notable organizations such as the Calgary Stampede and B.C. Hydro.
“Harty Locomotive Works Ltd.” is a name that reflects two of his passions: forging and steam power. Historically, locomotive works shops built steam locomotives from the ground up and utilized large forging equipment to create the necessary parts for these engines. This distinctive name sets his business apart from typical blacksmith shops while emphasizing the industrial equipment and specific interests that influence his work.
In addition to his blacksmithing ventures, he first picked up the violin at the age of six, beginning lessons with Thomas Schoen in Edmonton, AB. His desire to play old-time fiddle led him to Camp Calvin, where he had the opportunity to learn from some of Canada's best fiddle players. His achievements include being the Alberta Open Champion in 2016 and the Grand North American Old-Time Fiddle Champion in 2019 and 2023. He is also the 2019 and 2022 Canadian Grand Master Champion Fiddler.
