Derek founded the Heisler Archery Club over four years ago and has been continually expanding it with new targets and events. In August 2022, Derek and Mat Ponto acquired Grizz Targets from Jim Wilson of Sundre, AB. Jim, who had been running his target business for over a decade, was looking to retire and hand over the reins to younger, motivated individuals. Derek's passion for archery led him to seize the opportunity, and he decided to partner with his good friend, Mat. Mat, who grew up in the Galahad and Forestburg areas, shares a deep passion for hunting and the outdoors, which naturally led him to archery. When Derek proposed the idea of buying Grizz Targets, Mat was thrilled to join him and share his enthusiasm for hunting and the outdoors. Together, they converted an old dairy barn with over 3,500 square feet of space into "The Cave," their new manufacturing facility for targets. With Derek's enthusiasm for building targets and expanding the business, combined with Mat's background in sales and distribution, they are excited about the future of Grizz Targets in Flagstaff County.
